The Art of Interviewing

Collecting information through oral interviews is a very important part of the folklorist’s work. This section introduces teachers and students to the purposes and techniques of the interview process. Exercises help students understand the difference between “open” and “closed” questions. Worksheets are included and guidance in leading and group discussions provided. Instructions for a writing project based on the 3-paragraph interview, and for planning an oral presentation based on an interview, will put the skills and knowledge students have gained to use. Other sources for collecting family folklore and history can be found in Section IV: Resources.
