Traffic, Twitter, Drupal, and Dumb Luck

AnnieMacI've been publishing to this domain since 1999 in some fashion. I've been blogging since August of 2004. I rolled over to Drupal in November of 2006 at which point I started tracking stats. Traffic has had its ups and downs but basically has been increasing. Moving to Drupal improved my SEO rankings quite nicely.

This past month has been a bit of a bonanza of traffic on this little site of mine. First of all, Drupalcon Paris occurred. I was lucky enough to be there and I took quite a bit of video. Those videos were available within a day or two of the session itself. September 7-9th proved to be some of the heaviest traffic I've ever enjoyed. Part of that had to do with posting four sets of videos. I must admit to a tiny bit of embarrassment--the videos were pretty shaky as I hadn't packed a tripod. Some videos weren't complete due to battery failures. But, by in large, folks seemed pretty happy they were being popped up on line quickly. This had come off of a nice series of videos at Drupalcamp Colorado that I had posted in June and July.

The Good Blogs

In my eternal effort to grow traffic, I have signed up with TheGoodBlogs.  TheGoodBlogs sign up was quick and easy and within 5 minutes I had set up a widget which installed flawlessly into a Drupal block.  This is hardly surprising--TheGoodBlogs is powered by Drupal.  The widget isn't working right Blogger yet.  It previews fine, but then doesn't show up once the modified template is saved.

They categorize your site and then display your link to other bloggers who are in similar categories.  There isn't any money in it--essentially it is a link trading scheme.  It is up to you to montetize your site if you want to earn money.

Flickr Groups

I’ve started playing with Flickr Groups. Groups are kind of like sets—the difference being a group is a set with many participants. Groups allow common tagging and a common place to post images that you have in your main photostream and in your sets. Groups are another way to cross post your content. They allow for forum-like discussions and comments.

I’ve created a few groups (LOTS of sets) and joined a few. What I noticed immediately was that my views increased pretty significantly in a short period of time. I think I will start listing my web address as a keyword on every image that I post and see if that starts an increase in traffic to this blog.

MyBlogLog.com

I am trying out a service recommended by my friend Beth Kanter. She tells me that traffic to her site has increased significantly since starting to use the service.

My traffic has been fairly healthy, but pretty flat. It would be nice to tap into a new market.

MyBlogLog allows sets up the top links on your site, track traffic, join communities. It is essentially a social network of bloggers.

We'll see how it impacts my traffic. Thanks for the tip Beth!
