RSS

In the TechSoup Emerging Technologies there is a discussion on aidRSS, another RSS feed reader.

I've started playing with this tool. As I am an avid Netvibes user, I thought that it would be interesting to see what the difference is like.

My first impression was that it is a super clean and uncluttered interface. It is very easy to add feeds and gives you immediate access to all Diggs, Delicious links, Bloglines ratings, and Technorati authority.

Many things are not well explained. For example, I don't have a clue what the little "blog trends" graph icon means. I'm not sure what "post rank" means and it even has a help icon.

All in all, I really like it. I think it will likely replace Netvibes.

Eventful is a social networking site that allows loose or formal groups to create gatherings.  Groups can be based on physical location, interests, subjects, and events.

You can create groups or join groups that you have interest in.  You can search through the many groups that are available through a system based search engine.

To use Eventful, you first need to set up a user account.  To register, click on the top right register link.  Registration requires an email address, username, password, zip code, and year of birth.  You must accept the terms of service.  It takes about a minute.

Twitter is a curious social networking site that is a cross between blogging and IMing. When you use instant message, you are typically sending a short note to one person who might respond. When you blog, you are transmitting to a larger audience and hopefully have well thought out ideas that are crafted with some care.

Twitter is neither a blog, nor IM. It is a strange hybrid of the two. After you sign up and log in, Twitter asks you to answer, "What are you doing?" People answer this question through out the day essentially documenting everything from the mundane to the exotic.

I was asked by a colleague this evening about syndication using an RSS or Atom feed on a WikiSpace wiki. There isn't anything obvious about how to pry a feed from wikispace. If you try to resolve a URL from wikispace on feedburner, it indicates that the site isn't valid for a feed.

To figure out your Wikispace feed, use Firefox. In "BookMarks" choose "Subscribe to this Page". This will give the options for the various feeds you can access. Choose the feed you want to subscribe to or that you want to syndicate and you're done. You can then use that address to subscribe the feed to sites like Feedburner.

I am on my way to Rapid City, SD for the annual gathering of Western States Folklorists. Normally this meeting takes place somewhere in the in the West. This year the meeting is in the Midwest and Folklorists form the MidWest have been invited to participate.

WESTAF supports this gathering each year and sends a representative. This year, that person happens to be me. I will be doing a little presentation of The Ties That Bind web site that I've been working on. The site has a few cleanup items, but is for the most part complete. I'll also be doing a workshop on Monday on Web 2.0.

I popped into my Gmail account today to find that I had been invited to join a group called Apple-computer-bloggers.com.  Presumably I was invited because I do have a fair bit of content related to the Apple, Macs, and iPods.  Often this content is related to the Arts non-profit community, sometimes not.

Going to the site, it looks to be a news aggregator.  It solicits content creators to insert RSS feeds into their site and aggregates that content into a single digestable source.  If they can get enough Apple writers, it could become an interesting resource.  I'll quietly continue my writing, allow it to be aggregated, and once again see how it impacts traffic or not.
