iPhone Apps -- Mocha VNC Lite

Mocha VNC Lite is a free iPhone app. They also have an "full" version, but the additional features weren't compelling enough to convince me to pony up $6. These features are:

  • another keyboard
  • support for right mouse button
  • macro support
  • ctrl-alt-del key

Mocha VNC and VNC Lite are categorized under Business Apps. Mocha encourages you to try the lite version before buying the full version.

First, you will need a computer set up to share. I have instructions on how to set up a Mac to share via VNC on this blog. You will also need to poke a hole in your firewall.

Click on "Free" and load up the application. The app will show up on your home screen. Click on the app, and choose "Connect" in the top right corner of the screen.

It will ask you to enter a VNC Server IP address (you'll need to have a computer set up to share this way), a server port, and a VNC password. Enter these and click connect.

At this point, your iPhone should display a corner of your desktop. Use the hand icon in the bottom right corner to choose whether to move around the screen or whether to use the "mouse". Click on the keyboard icon on the left to use the keyboard. Use the plus icon to refresh, disconnect, and information about the app.

While accessing your desktop via an iPhone might not be the most optimal solution--there are times when it might be useful. If, for example, you needed to email a document that was on your desktop or move a file via FTP you have access. Mocha VNC Lite works remarkably well for a handheld VNC client.
