Upgrading from OSX 10.3 and 10.4 to 10.5Submitted by matthew on Sun, 2007-12-09 21:08 |
Over the weekend I upgraded four computers from 10.3 and 10.4 to 10.5. I had heard horror stories regarding the first release and so I decided to wait until the first software patch was released. That happened quite a few days ago. My wife bought the family pack on Saturday and I got down to upgrading a G4 iBook, a G5 iMac, a Mac Mini, and a Macbook Pro. The upgrades ranged from about 3 hours to just over an hour.
My first impressions.
First, multiple desktops is very cool. Using the control key and arrow keys (once you have set up the feature in System Preferences), you can move from desktop to desktop allowing for four times the desktop
Second, Time Machine is awesome. It is by far the simplest backup regimen I have ever used. It creates iterations of backups every hour, week, and month. You can check out the state of your hard drive at any given time.
Third, the range of my airport card has improved significantly. I was shocked at how much better I could connect to the Internet from our living room. Everything seems to be running more zippily on every one of the computers.
At $199 for all four computers, the upgrade is a deal.
