Pre Drupal and Day 1 at Drupalcon

The last few days have been pretty terrific.  They started out strange but got better and better.  I arrived on Tuesday at about 4:30.  The cab driver brought me to the wrong place despite having a GPS unit in his car.  I ended up catching a young couple who called the landlord and determined that the street was broken up into not-attaching pieces.  My flat was beyond two sets of old crumbling walls.  It was a little bit of a walk.  When I got up to the flat, I found that both my colleagues--Rad and Kevin--had waited to go for supper with me.
We found our way downtown and had paella at a little restaurant and then met up with other Drupalers at a sushi restaurant.  It was a nice cross section of folks from newbies all the way up to seasoned veterans like Drupal's creator, Dries.  The restaurant had wi-fi so the three of us went back to the flat to get our laptops.  When we got back, the manager had decided that he had had enough of "geeks" and dictated no more Internet and no more laptops.
We left shortly thereafter.
A group of us went to an Irish pub and had a pretty good time talking over a few drinks, the back to the flat.  This is where things get a bit wierd--but I'll leave that for a separate blog post.
The sessions I attended yesterday were as follows.

  1. The first session was focused on a review of the New York Observer website.  It mostly dealt with theming issues.  It had some useful information, but didn't bowl me over.
  2. The second session was billed as using Drupal in an Enterprise environment, but it really just had a discussion of the challenges of using Drupal in a large company.
  3. In the afternoon, I went to Greg Knaddison's session on Meetups.  I ended up being roped into taking notes.  No matter, I like Greg and he needed the essence of the session captured.
  4. I also went to a session that explored the success of Facebook and what lessons could be learned from that crowd to encourage the use of Drupal.  The main parallel made was the open APIs in both systems.

In the evening we went to a little restaurant called the "Venus" and had dinner.  I ate a lovely little stuffed chicken breast with rice.  The chicken had ham, bacon, and cheese inside.  After that the group went to another little restaurant and we socialised while drinking a little wine.
Terrific.
