Day 11 - Edinburgh the CitySubmitted by matthew on Thu, 2007-08-16 10:58 |
Yesterday we spent the day in the city. Festival is going on so many streets were closed for traffic. The energy in the air was tangible throughout the downtown.
In the morning we went to Edinburgh Castle. They have added stadium seats to the lower redoubt for a tattoo that occurs only in August.
God awful if you ask me. I think they probably could have worked something out that was a little less anachronistic.
The inside of the castle was quite beautiful. They have done a great job of restoring large portions of the structure. We spent about two hours looking around structure and caught a glimpse of the Scottish crown jewels. To my eye, the most amazing structure in the castle was the St. Margaret's Chapel, a structure built in the 12th Century and the oldest building still in use in Edinburgh.
In the afternoon we went to the zoo in Edinburgh because they have the largest penguin pool in the world--or so they say. It is quite a hilly zoo, but very pleasant. They also boast the only koalas and polar bear in the UK.
In the evening we went out for a curry at "Ignite", a terrific Bangladesh and Indian Restaurant.
All in all, it was a very pleasant day. Now we're headed back to London to spend some more time with my Aunt and Uncle. There is wireless on the train!
