MacOS X and Remote Desktop Part IISubmitted by matthew on Fri, 2007-06-22 03:43 |
In the first installment of discussing Remote Desktop, we covered how to set up a Mac to be accessed remotely and how to use a tool like Chicken of the VNC to access that computer over a local area network. To access the computer of the Internet is a tiny bit more complicated, but you've come this far.
First off, you need to know how to set up port forwarding on your router. This is usually a pretty simple process.
- Access your router via a browser. Many routers have a private IP address of 192.168.1.1
- For example, on a D-link DI 601 you can find these settings under "Virtual Server" and choose the "Advanced" tab.
- From here add a new virtual server.
- Enable it
- Give it a name like VNC
- Enter in the Private IP of the computer you want to control
- Leave the Protocol Type as TCP
- Both the private and public port should be set to 5900
Once this is done, you should be able to open Chicken of the VNC.
- Click on the Connection menu and choose New Connection
- In the Host put your public IP. If you don't know it go to http://whatsmyip.org/
- Enter your password from the previous post's section 2
- Click Connect
A window should open now with your remote computer's desktop showing.
