MacOS X and Remote Desktop Part II

In the first installment of discussing Remote Desktop, we covered how to set up a Mac to be accessed remotely and how to use a tool like Chicken of the VNC to access that computer over a local area network. To access the computer of the Internet is a tiny bit more complicated, but you've come this far.

First off, you need to know how to set up port forwarding on your router. This is usually a pretty simple process.

  1. Access your router via a browser. Many routers have a private IP address of 192.168.1.1
  2. For example, on a D-link DI 601 you can find these settings under "Virtual Server" and choose the "Advanced" tab.
  3. From here add a new virtual server.
  4. Enable it
  5. Give it a name like VNC
  6. Enter in the Private IP of the computer you want to control
  7. Leave the Protocol Type as TCP
  8. Both the private and public port should be set to 5900

Once this is done, you should be able to open Chicken of the VNC.

  1. Click on the Connection menu and choose New Connection
  2. In the Host put your public IP. If you don't know it go to http://whatsmyip.org/
  3. Enter your password from the previous post's section 2
  4. Click Connect

A window should open now with your remote computer's desktop showing.
