Rapid City

I am on my way to Rapid City, SD for the annual gathering of Western States Folklorists. Normally this meeting takes place somewhere in the in the West. This year the meeting is in the Midwest and Folklorists form the MidWest have been invited to participate.

WESTAF supports this gathering each year and sends a representative. This year, that person happens to be me. I will be doing a little presentation of The Ties That Bind web site that I've been working on. The site has a few cleanup items, but is for the most part complete. I'll also be doing a workshop on Monday on Web 2.0.

I am going to experiment with documenting the experience and posting it to the Internet in as near to real time as I can manage. The flickr tag that I'm will be using is awsfms and one photo was uploaded from the . Using RSS, I will use aggregator in Drupal to post these photos to this Website as they are uploaded into Flickr.

Lots of folks have done this in the past, but I haven't heard of many arts nonprofits engaging in this kind of effort.

The purpose of this experiment is four fold.

  1. To serve as a demonstration for the Monday Workshop
  2. To work through best practices to replicate this for groups like the Denver Office of Cultural affairs who are working with us in developing a Denver Cultural Community Site.
  3. To figure out how we could make this work in future events with multiple content providers
  4. I think it is pretty darn cool that it can be done.

Lets see if the experiment works and how easy it can be!
