Daylight Savings Time Rant
Today I updated our ReplayTVs for the new daylight savings times. It comprises a rather convoluted process of erasing the ZIP code on the unit and then putting the ZIP back. This got me thinking about the insanity of Daylight Savings.
Part of the 2005 energy bill in the US was to add an extra four weeks to DST. Millions of dollars have been allocated to see if it saves energy. This very kind of study has been done several times before and it has been proven that it doesn't conserve energy. Add to that when there is an hour more of sunshine, folks are more likely to head out in the car to do things in the evening, well it undermines the whole concept of energy savings. Retailers love it, because folks tend to go out shopping more during DST.
IT departments are going nuts trying to get computers ready for the weekend. Monday will probably have a fair number of companies scrambling to retro-actively set up computers, servers, mobile phones, blackberries, and so forth.
We are now at a place where Standard time takes up four months of the year and DST is eight months of the year. So what IS standard?
I personally think that time-zones should be abolished. Everybody should be on the same time. International business would run more smoothly. No more changing watches when travelling.

I do think there has to be time zones just for the fact that some countries are big enough to be hours apart when it comes to hours that people might be working. But this Daylight and Standard time is a total waste of time and money. If they want to have it be one or the other, fine. But they need to keep it the same year 'round. When we were a more agrerian society DST was established to help the farmers get in their crops. My husband's cousins in Iowa work day and night to get their crops in, depending on the weather and not the time of day.
