Secure Certificates...How Secure Are They?Submitted by matthew on Sat, 2007-07-07 04:24 |
When you go to a Web site to make a purchase OR you have a Web site that sells, you really want to be (or to make a customer) feel comfortable. Secure Certificates help purchasers, those passing delicate information, feel comfortable.
When secure certificates come from trustworthy sources, they provide a sense of safety. But they can also come from unsafe sources.
When you see the lock in your browser, does it mean you are safe?
NO!
If the certificate is issued from a trusted third party, then you can be assured that your information is being passed along somewhat safely. But not always.
Keep this in mind, ANYONE can become an issuer of secure certificates. I could do it in two minutes on my Mac.
So, when doing business on the Web, if you are a buyer--beware, look at every certificate that is issued and if you have any question about the voracity of a seller, walk away. If you are a seller, use a trusted third party like Verisign or RapidSSL. Don't try to do it on the cheap.
