501(c)3

Forming a Tech Nonprofit

For some time, a group of us in Metro Denver have been working on putting together a nonprofit with a mission to:

  1. To provide educational opportunities related to the use of the Drupal Content Management System such as managing and supporting meetings, camps, and conventions
  2. To promote and advocate use of the Drupal Content Management System

This may change a bit by the time we start filing paperwork, but it does convey what we want to do pretty well.

The IRS, Nonprofits, and Linking

First off, thank-you to Beth Kanter for bringing this to the collective twitterverse consciousness yesterday.

About a year ago, the IRS ruled on 501(c)3 linking to other sites. 501(c)3 organizations must stay politically neutral--they may not campaign, advocate, or otherwise endorse any political candidate. This means that (c)3s may not print pamphlets, engage in fundraising, and so forth in support of a candidate.
